VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, disposes of the American Flag through a dignified and honorable ceremony. All VFW posts will gladly accept your torn or weathered flags, and if they don't do the ceremony, they will ensure it makes it to a post that does. Volunteer organizations commonly carry out this duty as an act of community service, destroying old, worn, tattered, frayed, and/or faded Flags. Other groups are:

Veterans' service organizations (American Legion, VFW, Marine Corps, air force, League, D.A.V., etc).

Boy Scouts.

Girl Scouts.
