I am not an expert but my home has beautiful woodfloors and that's what we do once in a while to get it looking good. I used a nail punch and drove the "rivets" into the wood below the surface. As long as they are below the surface line, your sander will not catch on them and you can sand your floor. It is tedious and time consuming, but can be done.
