I believe people have the power within them to either live or die in a situation such as Brian's. Many people in that situation might have thrown in the towel and let the chips fall where they may. That is their choice. He found a motivation to continue and take back what was his. Outstanding, and a living metaphor for what so many are going through day by day. God bless him.

I am encouraged by his recovery. I am also interested in how long his rehab took and how aggressive it was. I have a friend that was hit by a drunk driver who was caught but only got one year in jail. My friend had a stroke and is blind in one eye. It has been only one year and he is still in a wheelchair

The good Lord Jesus is the giver of life and for some unknown reason to Brian or anyone else God has chosen to leave him with his family and friends awhile longer. God make no mistakes, there is a reason this man is still alive and has recovered so well so far, I would seek the Lords direction in finding out why I was left here if I were Brian.

Fascinating to read what is going on inside the mind of the injured person. A very inspiring story, indeed. I work at a Rehab hospital and see many cases just like his, and have seen the violence, too, and it is sometimes hard to understand and deal with for the medical personnel. It is therapy that works the miracle, does the finishing touches, so that the injured patient can regain his life. Not in all cases, but in many. Thank you for writing it, for recording what was going on inside your mind, your thoughts, during the time you were unable to communicate!

I am sorry that your friend had a stroke in addition to his TBI; sadly he may never fully recover. I have met people who have sustained TBIs. Some can go on with success after rehab. and become special educ. teachers or therapists or... Personally, I'm sorry for those whose recovery is limited.

Brian's recovery will probably continue for years... Some with TBI's may go on to be Special ed. teachers or therapists or... Others may be limited in recovery; I'm very sorry to say. I personally sustained a TBI as a passenger in an alcohol accident. I, too, had a piece of skull removed for an inner cranial pressure tube (ICPT), had to relearn some basics, and received some therapy. I had a newly earned elem. teaching degree at the time. Now, 20 years later, I just earned my MA in Spec. ed. at UofM. My passion is teaching students with cognitive impairments (CI) -- mild, moderate, to severe. The teaching market is so very tough, now that I owe UofM $300. monthly. God saved me, and God has more than one plan for me, I believe. If only I could share my experience and recovery and passion when sitting at a table with 7-10 teaching-job interviewers... WHAT do you think? There is such a stigma to Traumatic Brain Injury, despite its results. I so very much desire to reach and to teach those with impairments and in my own classroom vs. substitute teaching. Please pray if you're called to do so.

This story is so true. I would love for Brian to e-mail me regarding this. My son also has a traumatic brain injury he suffered four years ago in a car accident. I would love for him and my son to talk about their recoveries. My son is still recovering each day and thank the lord for that because the some of the doctors gave up hope but God didn't. With the support, love, and prayers from family, friends, and strangers, God saved my son.

I am so grateful for his recovery, however, I think that more needs to be done to find these "hit and run" drivers. These cases need to be given the full forensic crime scene analysis that murder scenes get. They are, after all, murders or attempted murders. Here in Central Florida they happen all of the time, but nobody ever catches them. DOT should make their camera data base available, too. It's going to take a smarter police force, willing to do the job and hunt these people down to make them pay.

I am so very happy that you have gotten so far into your recovery and your growth continues. Your willingness to talk about this to the public is a major step for others also suffering from this crisis. You are obviously motivated to continue your growth and arrive farther ahead than when you started. We would all like to see the person responsible for your TBI found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. There are so many of us who have had a similar incident (not necessarily from an auto accident) who have accomplished our recovery as well, but many who have not and are still suffering from the frustration or not being where we want to be. Reading the posts of people who are there with them is a major step for them. They are not alone. Thank you!

I think it is wonderful that he recovered but he has scars left to remind him. Swelling on the brain can really do you a person in but he made it.

--- for your suggestion on working in a psych. hospital. My mom is a psych. nurse, and I have thought of working in a rehab home or other facility such as a hospital. Unfortunately, one has to teach in the field in which they're certified==150 days per year-- such as in an elem. school or in spec. educ. classrooms or.... Then teachers must take more classes to keep his/her certificate valid until they retire from teaching.... Something will come my way. Thank you, also, for your prayers!
