These are commonly experienced side effects and you should notify the physician that prescribed the medication. There are multiple reasons that need to be considered. One factor that might be of important is your genetic profile . . . high cholesterol levels seem to have a genetic predisposition.

Both of my parents died from heart disease and both had markedly elevated cholesterol levels. Neither parent was being treated with medication but the recommendation was 'dietary.' My sphere of medical interest includes genetics, ethnology and infectious disease. I have a cholesterol level that is upper range and recently retired after a second MI! My diet has always included veggies and fruits but none of the foods that are considered to cause an elevation of cholesterol. Medications? My physician decided that the risk factor and the serious side effects that I experienced were are not acceptable. Not only that, the cholesterol levels remained the same.

One recommendation that I used consistently with my own patients: LEARN TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN MEDICAL CARE! ASK QUESTIONS!

Simvastatin is for high cholesterol levels and it is probably the reason your values are lower. "Dairy eater only," do you mean that you do not eat meat or that your food intake is only from 'dairy products?'

Dairy products have a tendency to cause higher cholesterol levels so you need to have a diet that includes vegetables and fruits. The physician that prescribed the medication needs to be the one to help answer your question. You have to be more persistent with your physician until you have the answers so KEEP ASKING UNTIL YOU HAVE ANSWERS!

I read all the answers, including the one from a close friend. Agree with some answers and disagree with others -- this one is from my perspective!

Your blood chemistry is normal but you have swelling with aches and pains that do not seem to have been satisfactorily answered by your physician, is that correct?

Water is important and that is from Butch. Recommended water intake is at least 8 oz. four times a day. I recommend more because of the high humidity in this area. There needs to be consideration for contraindications for those who are fluid restricted.

Your physician needs to listen to your questions and answer them. You can keep asking or change physicians . . . as a patient, that is your right. Keep asking and remember that it is both Your Right and Responsibility. Physicians that specialize in one field may not see the entire overview.

Be consistent and direct in what you ask. Make a list of questions and take that with you. If you have more than one physician, be certain that they know about each other and the medications that you may be taking. Choose a primary care physician so that all the information from any other physician will be sent to your primary care physician.

Medical advice given by anyone should include that all important, "Ask your physician!"
