&lt;p&gt;It depends on how you plan to use your grapes.  If you are just using them to eat and make in to some pies and jellies, then pick them when they taste sweet enough to you.  Grapes really won't continue to ripen after you have picked them so wait until they taste good.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If you are looking to make wine then you need to test the sugar content.  Depending on the type of wine will determine the sugar content you want.&lt;/p&gt;

Are there other symptoms? say, powdery leaves or dried leaves, or too much water or lack of water, Wat about fertilizers applied,when and what ratios etc. I understand that crop failure means raisons or excellent wine from mutated grapes . This might be a valuable lesson if you like to experiment. I'd be curious if you discover something interesting. If so let me know.
