Not only is Sarah Palin suing over the subpoena's in Troopergate and Alaska is having to pick up the tab on her lawyers, she now has another suit on her.

She had some big sports complex built in her town of Wasilla but it was built on land the city had no title to. The land belonged to someone else. Obviously, he sued and got a bunch of money plus $7000,000 in interest and several thousand more for his lawyers. But now he is suing again over the valve of the land. Honestly. Is this Dum and Dummer?

But I was looking thru her history and something is odd! She went to 5 schools to get her Bachelor of Science degree. (Her ONLY degree) Sometimes just one semester in a school. And then later when she had jobs, she only stayed a very short time, as well. Even her big job as a TV announcer was only a couple months. Then she became Mayor and went on a firing binge and seemed to not like much of anyone and again as Governor more heads rolled.

I know she says she wanted to "clear up corruption" but really, is even the town librarian corrupt, all her staff and advisors?

Palin attended Wasilla High School in Wasilla.

In 1982, Palin enrolled at Hawaii Pacific College but left after her first semester, transferring in 1983 to North Idaho College and then to the University of Idaho. She attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska for one term, returning to the University of Idaho to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism, graduating in 1987.

In 1988, she worked as a sports reporter for KTUU-TV in Anchorage, Alaska, and for the Mat-Su Valley Frontiersman as a sports reporter. She also helped in her husband’s commercial fishing family business.

She served on the city council from 1992-96. She did not finish her second term as she ran and was elected for Mayor. Palin served two terms (1996–2002) as mayor of Wasilla. At the conclusion of Palin's tenure as mayor in 2002, the town had about 6,300 residents.

In 2002, Palin ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor. She chaired The Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission beginning in 2003 but resigned in Jan 2004.

Palin became Alaska's first female governor at age 42 in Dec 2008.

Hi Carol,

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. I didn't say this but the bible. It appears that Palin changed her mind quite a bit. That maybe the change she wants to take to Washington.

What's so ironic, is the ladies are falling all over her. She could be a sheep in wolves clothes. One day they will wake up and all of their rights will be gone. I certainly hope, that now that the initial hoopla is over, that the ladies will start to research and listen to the news broadcasts and read the news papers. Once they vote her in, there is no turning back, and there will be no need to complain about their rights.

What would happen with us, you think, if we just decided we didn't want to respond to a subpeona? The ax would come down on us!

Our butts would be sitting in a cell right now. You have to realize that she has the entire Mccain legal team pulling all kinds of underhanded schemes. These were George Bush's hit men. Mccain has a staff of 19 of these corrupt men working on his staff, and God only knows how many others setting up his administration.

I don't know of any good Florida blogs, if you find one please share.

I went to 3 diff schools and never got my AA, didnt get much education either because I did it for the GI bill and the courses were required for my trade school. Like I am reading below Linclon didnt atend Colloge and did rudimentery lower education. Sarah has been accyussed of being in scandels before but they all end up not being scandels, they are just things that happen and the media has twisted it into a scandel. Obama is a scoundrel and you Obamaidiots can care not-he is just your friendly Arab calling himslef a black man born to a white woman in Africa and no proff of any of his education or birth

Good go someone other than me on this site actually looked up some of this womans shinannigans. There is so much more.

We can argue all day and night but let us face the truth, facts, articles, videos of this woman, testimony of those who worked with her, this is what is needed.

To know her is not to love her. To know her is a field of red flags. Everyone has something in their past. She was not against the Bridge to Nowhere, like any good politician she was for it then against it. Remember the interview she was pinged on this with? She did not tell all the truth concerning the Alaskan Pipeline that Nixon shut down after the oil spill off the coast of California and got into bed with the Saudis who have been doing us over ever since, the pipeline is not near ready to go. She did hire friends and those who got her into office. She has only been a Mayor of her tiny hometown and Govenor for less than 2 years. She did give every Alaskan rich and poor a 3200 check in Sept before she was asked to be VP and it brought her ratings not to 80% but 65% this from the mouths of Alaskans.

I pledge allegience to the flag(Obama refused to do) of the United States of America and to the Republic for which she stands(Republic not Democracy, ordained with a Constiution to lead our way)One Nation(not anymore) under God(Christians persecuted all over the world and in America)with Liberty and Justice for all.

Remember that? Remember when we learned about it in school, the reason we came to this country, the reason we fought the British, the Boston Tea Party, WWI and WWII???? Hello anybody at home out there?????

We need a leader, we need leaders, we need people in our country dedicated to the pursuit of happiness, we need people who stand for not against us. We need to remember who we are. This woman pulled out a smoke screen that was just as damaging as Obamas. Yes I voted for McCain but I had no candidates to vote for. I was forced into a corner. I was scarred to death McCain would die and leave giggiling ya betcha with her hand on the trigger. But Obama made my blood run cold. His disdain for this country he wants to lead left me ill. You will see all of you.

When he rolls out the barrel you won't have a barrel of fun. We need to stop being the monkeys in the zoo with the keepers throwing us a banana here and there but the Eagles that soar and the Hawks that get the job done. We can not afford much more Tom Foolery from anyone and that includes little missguided hood.

Just for the record again, I did not like Palin but I voted for McCain because there was no way I could vote for Obama.

Yes we will be in very deep trouble with this man, if he is not impeached shortly after swearing in. This new scandel with the Senate seat is very hot.

As someone else has already said, I thoroughly agree, this is just the start of a scandelous presidency.

Are you SERIOUS? Obama changed his statements (translates- lied) more than any presidential candidate in history. He even dropped his GOOD friend Mr. "Hate Whitey" Wright when he realized he was damaging his campaign. Nice of him to do after praising Wright for 21 years....oh, and if you have a bad memory I can refresh it with many more. Obama is the devil's spawn.

54. My Donations Have Been Checked Thoroughly. LIAR--you only gave back Hsu ($72K) and Rezko (first $66K, then when caught lying $86K, then when caught lying again $150K and now caught lying YET AGAIN OBAMA, it’s $250k) their money when publically called on their involvement in your campaigns.

55. My Church Is Like Any Other Christian Church. LIAR--your church is so extreme, the pastor who married you, Rev. Wright, just got done blaming the US for 9/11 and named Louis Farrakhan their person of the year.

LIAR--you have yet to repudiate Wright, who married you and your wife and you still donate large sums of money to assist the church in furthering its message--hatred and revenge. Seems Mr. Auchi may have helped Obama buy his million dollar property long before Obama had millions of dollars. 58. I never heard sermons like Rev. Wrights, that have been in videos all day including YouTube. LIAR!--3 days later during your Mea Culpa BS speech you said, “Did I hear controversial statements while I sat in that church? Yes I did.”

59. The Passport Invasion is a conspiracy to find dirt on me. LIAR–your own Campaign Foreign Policy Advisor is the CEO of the company that looked into your records. PS-You had them look into yours to hide the fact you looked into Clinton’s and McCain’s more than a year before!

Obama doesn’t take money from PACs. He also doesn’t take money from lobbyists.

But he does accept money from executives and other employees of oil companies and two of his fundraisers are oil company executives. As of Feb. 29, Obama’s presidential campaign had received nearly $214,000 from oil and gas industry employees and their families, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

Clinton had received nearly $307,000 from industry workers and their families and Republican Sen. John McCain, the likely GOP presidential nominee, received nearly $394,000, according to the Center’s totals.

67. I don’t think my church is actually particularly controversial, Obama said at a community meeting in Nelsonville, Ohio, earlier this month. LIAR–Yesterday, he told a different story. “Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in church? Yes,” he said in his speech yesterday in Philadelphia .

68. Look at my education record in Illinois. LIAR--In reality, Obama never really championed the local councils. He supported them behind the scenes and only eventually came out publicly on their behalf. When he did weigh in, he came down on the wrong side of the debate against protecting principals from unwarranted dismissals and in favor of keeping councils independent, no matter what.

1. Obama claims special birth. Much more so than we might believe.

Reports emanating from Africa allege his mother was in Kenya with his ARAB Kenyan (NOT Black Kenyan) father--this is clearly shown in Kenyan Govt. Registry documents which list the father as an Arab Kenyan--at a very late term of her pregnancy and was not allowed on a flight to return to HAWAII .

She gave birth to him in Kenya , immediately got on a plane and then registered him as being born in Hawaii.

2. He is NOT an African American but an Arab American and cannot claim African minority status, which by US Federal regulations require a person to have 1/8 (one eighth) of the minority blood (12%).

From his mother he has 50% white blood, from his father he has 43.25% Arab blood and from his MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER he manages to hold onto 6.75% African or Black heritage blood.

He has had to duck and weave all his life and use whatever lies he could use to even pass for black and the benefits this minority status provided. So even this, while understandable-is a documented LIE.

Reports emanating from Africa allege his mother was in Kenya with his ARAB Kenyan (NOT Black Kenyan) father--this is clearly shown in Kenyan Govt. Registry documents which list the father as an Arab Kenyan--at a very late term of her pregnancy and was not allowed on a flight to return to HAWAII .

She gave birth to him in Kenya , immediately got on a plane and then registered him as being born in Hawaii.

2. He is NOT an African American but an Arab American and cannot claim African minority status, which by US Federal regulations require a person to have 1/8 (one eighth) of the minority blood (12%).

From his mother he has 50% white blood, from his father he has 43.25% Arab blood and from his MATERNAL GRANDMOTHER he manages to hold onto 6.75% African or Black heritage blood.

SALT MARSH HARVEST MOUSE Stimulus has $30M to save Pelosi's salt marsh mouse (Nope, that's NOT pork!)
Speaker Nancy Pelosi's claim that the massive stimulus spending bill contains no pet projects after uncovering in the bill more than $30 million for wetlands conservation in her San Francisco Bay area district, including work she previously championed to protect the salt marsh harvest mouse.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi represents the city of San Francisco and has previously championed preserving the mouse's habitat in the Bay Area.

The revelation immediately became a political football, as Republicans accused Democrats of reneging on a promise to keep so-called earmarks that fund lawmakers' favorite projects out of the legislation. Democrats, including Mrs. Pelosi, countered that the accusations were fabricated.

Politics aside, the episode demonstrates that no matter how hard lawmakers argue that they technically lived up to their pledge to keep specific projects from being listed in the bill, there is little stopping the federal money from going to those projects after the legislation passes and federal and state agencies begin deciding where to spend their newfound dollars.

Programs for sexually transmitted diseases, smoking prevention, a clean-burning power plant and a computer center also appear ready to get infusions of money once the bill becomes law, congressional offices told The Washington Times.

"One of the proudest boasts of Democrats supporting their trillion-dollar spending plan is that it doesn't contain earmarks. But it seems like powerful Democrats will still find a way to bring home the bacon," said a frustrated Michael Steel, spokesman for House Minority Leader John A. Boehner, Ohio Republican, who took direct aim at the mouse.

"This certainly doesn't sound like it will create or save American jobs," Mr. Steel said. "So can Speaker Pelosi explain exactly how we will improve the American economy by helping the adorable little" critter?

A spokesman for Mrs. Pelosi said Republicans "fabricated" the claim.

"The speaker nor her staff have had any involvement in this initiative. This is yet another contrived partisan attack," Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said. "Restoration is key to economic activity, including farming, fisheries, recreation and clean water."

Republican lawmakers said they learned of the marsh money when asking about how various agencies plan to spend stimulus money. The vitality of the mouse has been an issue for Mrs. Pelosi and other California Democrats since the early 1990s.

President Obama boasts that the stimulus plan contains no earmarks because Congress technically did not use the earmark process for lawmakers to request and drop in specific spending items. Congressional leaders were putting the finishing touches on a $789 billion final version of the bill Wednesday night. It was not clear how many of the programs criticized by Republicans remained in the package.

Some of those items that Republicans are calling earmarks include $200 million for a clean-burning power plant in Mattoon, Ill., and $750 million for the National Computer Center and $500 million for the National Institutes of Health offices, both located in Maryland.

Other spending questioned by Republicans -- but not considered on the chopping block -- are $275 million for flood prevention, $200 million for public computer centers at community colleges and libraries, and $650 million for the digital TV converter-box coupons.

The list goes on: $1 billion for administrative costs and construction of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration office buildings, $100 million for constructing U.S. Marshals office buildings, and $1.3 billion for NASA, including $450 million tagged for science.

Then there is the $300 million for hybrid and electric cars for the federal government. The funding includes golf carts for federal workers.
Stimulus bill amendment could hurt Las Vegas

The deal provides $8 billion for high-speed rail projects, for example, including money that could benefit a controversial proposal for a magnetic-levitation rail line between Disneyland, in California, and Las Vegas, a project favored by Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.). The 311-mph train could make the trip from Sin City to Tomorrowland in less than two hours, according to backers.

The Bailout Alternative: Virtual Mark to Market
Imagine if you had a $200,000 mortgage on a $300,000 house that you planned on living in for 20 years. But a neighbor, because of very special circumstances had to sell his house for $150,000. Then, imagine if your banker said you had to mark to this “new market” and give the bank $80,000 in cash immediately (so that you would have 20% down), or lose your home. Would this reflect reality? Not at all. Would this create chaos? Absolutely.

According to some pundits, the simplest solution to our economic crisis is to suspend or abolish the mark to market accounting rules.
For those unfamiliar. Mark to market is where a company reprices their assets on a daily basis to the most recent market transaction price. If asset prices are falling, this means that the total value of assets on a banks or other company’s books falls. When the total value of assets fall, then those who have lent them money get worried. They are worried because the assets they lent them money against now are worth less. If the borrower cant pay them back, that leaves the lender SOL. SO, the lender demands that the borrower raise cash immediately or add assets to make their asset total higher. If the borrower does not, the lender will either take back enough assets to cover their loan, or find some other way to get their money back.
In a normal market, that wouldn’t necessarily be bad because the borrower could refinance the asset and pay off the original lender. In this market, with credit tight or not available at all, that is not possible. So the borrower ends up selling assets at far below market value to raise cash quickly.
This type of desperation sale is happening everywhere, the latest example is Goldman Sachs sale to Warren Buffet. If enough assets are being sold at firesale prices, the market for those assets collapses, as we have seen with housing prices. This creates a vicious circle. Asset prices are sold at firesale prices. That forces more mark to market writedowns, which in turn forces more firesales. etc, etc.
To some the resolution is to end or suspend mark to market accounting rules. Their logic is obvious. If there is no need to mark to market, then assets are not written down. Banks and other companies are not forced to have firesales to generate capital and prices of assets are not pushed down by the firesales. All good, right ?
Not so fast.
The other side of the coin is that because assets are not being marked to market, shareholders and potential investors have no real idea what the assets on the bank/companies balance sheet are really worth. When prices are going up, shareholders and investors don’t care. Prices are going up.
When prices are going down, as in this market, cash is dear, and investors and shareholders do not want to take any chances that the asset values on the balance sheets have fallen dramatically. No mark to market, no trust in the balance sheet, which means shareholders run to the exits and there is no one there to buy their shares. Which means banks have to go out and find someone way to raise capital from people who dont know the real value of their assets.
Both routes get us to where we are today: A 700B bailout from you and I the friendly taxpayer
Which leads to my proposal which solves both sides of the coin.
First, let me say that its about time we take advantage of the fact that we live in a broadband enabled society. Our society is now educated to go online for information. We are digital information consumers. Its time we recognize that fact and integrate it into our decision making process.
My proposal is that we suspend mark to market rules, but require complete asset transparency for any company that chooses not to mark to market. If a company avoids mark to market accounting, Every asset that company owns should be required to be listed on their website and updated in REAL TIME on their website. A full asset description, original cost or loan value, value on the books, and latest transaction for this class of asset, or an actual transaction price for the asset.
This means that investors will have the same information available as if the company had marked to market, but their actual balance sheet would not change. The best of both worlds.
I would recommend that every company be required to post this accounting information in a standardized format on a web page, AND to also post a complete comma delineated file that includes all that assets and required info.
Standardization is important as is this asset list. Why ? Because in this digital age, it wont be long till a very smart capatilist, takes all the data and creates a business out of consolidating and publishing the data and possibly even creating an exchange for the data.
If this is done, it allows for several alternatives to the current bailout plan to happen. It allows for what some call the “SwedishPlan” (from the 1992 Swedish bank bailout), but should probably now be called the Warren Buffet Plan or the 3P Plan. It is the direct purchase of equity from the banks/organizations that need it, in the form of preferred stock and warrants in a 10 plus 10 format. (10pct P erferred, in P erpetuity, callable at 10pct P remium, ie the 3P Plan)
A combination of a 3P plan and the Virtual Mark to Market gives the government a chance to make money back for taxpayers. It solves the banks problem of liquidity, and it stops the firesale of assets, while most importantly, increasing market transparency and in turn confidence in the market
It allows for the straight purchase of assets, by the Treasury or anyone else. I would of course recommend that any assets sold by institutions to the government then be updated with the price paid , date and who the buyer is. Transparency is king

Mitch McConnell says, to give the proposed economic stimulus plan some perspective: "If you started the day Jesus Christ was born and spent $1 million every day since then, you still wouldn't

We could do the math, but politifact.com in care of the St. Petersburg Times did the math for us. Biblical scholars may debate exactly when Jesus Christ was born, but the most common finding is that Jesus Christ was born some wher around 4 B.C. If this is true, then 4 B.C. should be adjusted to 0 B.C. and this would be 2012, which in a screwy way would mean Barack Obama was up for re-election, which would make some people happy, whatever!

So let's stick with Mitch McConnell's math. Take 2012 years times 365 days, then add 513 days for leap years, and you get about $734.5 billion. That's less than an economic stimulus package that could cost anywhere from about $800 billion to $1.2 trillion. But McConnell omits, since Republicans are such friends with Wall Street, that the sum is only slightly higher than the $700 billion Wall Street bailout.

Sometimes the numbers numb us. It may have been better if million and billion and trillion didn't rhyme. They make the dollar amounts sound too much alike. For example, $100 million to the ear sounds like way more than $1 billion, whereas actually $100 million is only 10 percent of $1 billion. Then we get into trillions, such as this year's $1.2 trillion budget deficit and the overall $11.7 trillion budget debt, and we don't quite realize that $1 trillion is actually $1,000,000,000,000, or $1,000,000 million, or $1 million million. There are many ways of looking at it.

Every US president is judged by his first 100 days. But those of Barack Obama are almost certain to be the most momentous and transformative since Franklin Roosevelt took power at the depths of the Great Depression.
Every condition is in place for a blizzard of action – in Congress, on the diplomatic front, and through executive decisions by the White House which will send powerful signals of the direction in which he intends to take the country.
First, Americans are aching for change, visible in Mr Obama's record high approval rating for an incoming president of 75 per cent – a figure underlining how goodwill towards him, and the desire that he succeed, crosses party lines. It also gives him an immense authority. A president is at his most powerful in the early stages of his term; never has that been truer than now.
Second, thanks to an exceptionally well-organised transition, the new administration is well placed to hit the ground running. Third and most important, Mr Obama has no choice but to move fast.
The expected initiatives fall into three broad categories. The easiest, and likely to be among the quickest, are straightforward but highly symbolic decisions that show the Bush era is over. These moves, which aides refer to as "low-hanging fruit," will include the order to close Guantanamo Bay prison within 12 months as he signalled yesterday.
Mr Obama may also issue an early order lifting Mr Bush's restrictions on federal aid for stem cell research. He may also take steps to ease curbs on travel to Cuba. That would signal the days are finally numbered for the 50-year-old US embargo that has failed to bring down the Castro regime and is opposed by almost every country on earth.
The second category consists of the steps Mr Obama simply has to take – to revive the economy and prevent the collapse of the US financial system. Even before taking office, he had lobbied successfully for Congress to release the second tranche of the $700bn bank bailout package.
Within a few weeks, lawmakers are likely to pass a stimulus package of tax cuts and increased federal spending worth $800bn or more, while Mr Obama's economic team will have to come up with further aid for the distressed banking system. The aid will almost certainly be linked with help for home-owners facing foreclosure.
The third category is less specific but perhaps the most far-reaching and aimed at making good what he referred to in his inaugural address as "our collective failure to make hard choices, and prepare the nation for a new age." Under that heading come the biggest issues of all: America's failure to live within its means, the curbing of runaway entitlement programmes in general and the overdue repair of a bloated, inefficient and hugely expensive healthcare system.
These may not be achieved in 100 days, or even 1,000 days but speed here too is of the essence. The country wants to be told the truth and is ready to make sacrifices. Right now, the "bully pulpit" potential of the presidency is at its zenith.
In short, it's going to be an action-packed 100 days, even without a major foreign crisis, in the Middle East or over Iran's nuclear programme, say, to scramble everything.

These may not be achieved in 100 days, or even 1,000 days but speed here too is of the essence. The country wants to be told the truth and is ready to make sacrifices. Right now, the "bully pulpit" potential of the presidency is at its zenith.
In short, it's going to be an action-packed 100 days, even without a major foreign crisis, in the Middle East or over Iran's nuclear programme, say, to scramble everything.

Obama sets 1-year Guantanamo closure deadline

In a first-week flurry of activity focused squarely on rolling back some of George Bush's policies, Obama set a one-year deadline for shutting Guantanamo and also barred harsh treatment of terrorism suspects held there.
The prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba - where prisoners have been detained for years without charge, some subjected to interrogation that human rights groups say amounted to torture - has damaged America's moral standing in the world.
"The message that we are sending around the world is that the United States intends to prosecute the ongoing struggle against violence and terrorism and we are going to do so vigilantly," Obama said in a White House ceremony after signing executive orders.
"We are going to do so effectively and we are going to do so in a manner that is consistent with our values and our ideals," he added.
With foreign policy on the front burner, Obama was ready to wade deeper into the thicket of diplomacy with a visit to the State Department to welcome Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Wednesday.
It comes as Obama, who was sworn in on Tuesday, is moving quickly to tackle a litany of foreign policy challenges bequeathed to him by Bush and highlighted during the Illinois Democrat's run for the White House.
Those include pursuing a policy of much broader engagement overseas than the Bush administration, which was criticized for go-it-alone "cowboy diplomacy," and refocusing the fight against terrorism away from the unpopular Iraq war and back onto the Afghanistan conflict.
Obama could seize the chance on Thursday to announce former Sen. George Mitchell, a seasoned international diplomat, as envoy to revive moribund Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts, which Bush was criticized for failing to give enough attention.
There was also strong speculation that Obama would name Dennis Ross, a veteran Arab-Israeli negotiator, as special envoy to the Middle East, with a focus on tackling Iran's nuclear program. Obama has promised to pursue engagement with Tehran, in contrast to Bush's efforts to isolate it.
Former U.N. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke was widely seen as the top candidate for envoy for the Afghanistan and Pakistan,
On the domestic front, with markets volatile and job losses mounting, Obama held his second daily meeting in a row with top economic advisers to try to chart a course out of the worst financial crisis in decades.

In early October , as the meltdown of the financial industry gained momentum following the collapse of Lehman Brothers, a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 59% of U.S. voters agreed with Ronald Reagan that “government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”
Since then, the stock market has fallen roughly 3,000 points, millions of jobs have been lost, nearly a trillion dollars has been spent so far to bail out the financial industry, an additional $787-billion government stimulus package has been approved, and a new president has taken office who has proposed spending billions and billions more.
Despite all that, a new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey shows that the basic views of the American people have not change: 59% of voters still agree with Reagan’s inaugural address statement. Only 28% disagree, and 14% are not sure.

Middle-income voters are more likely to agree with Reagan than those who earn less than $20,000 or more than $100,000.
Political liberals strongly reject Reagan’s view by a 60% to 28% margin. Forty-seven percent (47%) of moderates agree, while 32% do not. Conservatives are overwhelmingly supportive.
Although the Republican Party in Washington veered away from Reagan’s approach in the years since the 40th president left office, 83% of Republican voters around the country still agree with him. So do 40% of Democrats and 60% of those not affiliated with either major party.
A majority of all voters say the Republican Party should return to the views and values of Reagan to be successful.
In a corollary to Reagan’s assessment of government, most voters believe that no matter how bad things are, Congress could always make them worse .
Other recent polls show that most voters continue to believe that tax cuts are good for the economy and 48% hold the view that increased government spending hurts the economy .
Other survey data shows that 72% of voters believe a free market economy is better than one managed by the government. That’s little changed since December .
While voters prefer the free market in theory, they are clearly willing to support government intervention for specific projects. Most Americans favor a six-month moratorium on mortgage foreclosures . However, most are opposed to more bailouts .

Despite the country's persistent economic problems, 30% of voters now believe America is moving in the right direction, the highest level in several years.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 62% say the nation is heading down the wrong track, while eight percent (8%) are not sure.
The number who says the country is moving in the right direction is up from 26% last week . The current finding is up nine points from the week after Barack Obama was elected president.
In October 2004, 43% said they believed the nation was heading in the right direction, while 54% thought it was heading down the wrong track . By May 2006, only 27% felt the nation was heading in the right direction .

In the latest survey, more than a third of women (34%) say the country is heading in the right direction, up from 31% a week ago and 29% the week before. Twenty-six percent (26%) of men agree, showing no change from last week’s poll. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of men and 57% of women believe America is going down the wrong track.
For the second straight week, the majority of African-American voters (59%) say the nation is moving in the right direction, while only 28% say it is heading down the wrong track. Among white voters, 27% say right direction, up from 24% a week ago, while 66% say wrong track, down from 69% last week.
Opinions among Republicans and unaffiliated voters have changed little over the past week. Just 12% of GOP voters say the nation is headed in the right direction. Eighty-three percent (83%) believe it is heading down the wrong track. For the second straight week, 21% of unaffiliated voters believe the nation is heading in the right direction. Seventy percent (70%) now say wrong track, down from 73% last week.
The majority of Democrats (51%) believe the United States is headed the right way, up from 48% a week ago, while 38% say wrong track, down from 41% last week.
But investors now have less confidence than non-investors in the Rasmussen Consumer Index .
Support for the $787-billion economic stimulus plan has fallen since President Obama signed it into law last week.
Obama has proposed government help for those who can't afford their mortgage payments , but 55% say that promotes bad behavior by helping those who bought houses they couldn't afford. However, most Americans (56%) support a six-month plan forcing banks to stop all mortgage foreclosures.
Overall, 54% of Americans say “no” to all bailouts for struggling homeowners, auto companies and U.S. banks .
Obama’s ratings in the daily Presidential Approval Index remain high, though the number who strongly approve of the president has slipped somewhat since his inauguration.

Obama forecasts $2.7 trillion deficit

PRESIDENT Barack Obama was due to forecast a massive government deficit of $US1.75 trillion ($2.69 trillion) early today in his administration's first budget that sets goals of overhauling the healthcare system and shoring up the ailing US economy.
The deficit would represent 12.3per cent of US GDP, the largest share since World War II, and more than triple the previous record of $455 billion in the 2008 fiscal year.
A senior administration official said Mr Obama's $US3 trillion-plus spending blueprint also asks Congress to raise taxes on the wealthy in 2011 and cut Medicare costs to provide health care for the uninsured.
Mr Obama's first budget also holds out the possibility of spending $US250 billion more for additional financial industry rescue efforts on top of the $US700billion that Congress has already authorised, according to an official, speaking before the release of the budget early today.
The official said the administration felt it would be prudent to ask for additional resources to deal with the financial crisis, the most severe in seven decades.
In a budget blueprint easily exceeding $US3 trillion for 2010, Mr Obama foresees $US634 billion over 10 years as a "down payment" on health care reform, a senior administration official said.
His proposal is meant to start a dialogue with Congress over how to provide national healthcare coverage in one of the only Western countries that does not have it, while also slowing costs of healthcare, which amount to $US2.4 trillion a year and continue to rise as Mr Obama tries to put the brakes on the economy. Five weeks into his presidency, the economy continues to be the main issue confronting the Obama administration.
So far, Mr Obama's popularity remains high and his administration seems intent on pursuing the big programs he promised during his campaign. He has also promised to slash the deficit through a mixture of tax hikes and trimming wasteful spending.
The budget presentation follows Mr Obama's speech to Congress earlier this week in which he outlined the need to proceed with healthcare reform and the development of alternative energy resources even as the Government spends unprecedented amounts of money to stimulate the economy and rescue the banking system.
In his budget, Mr Obama is expected to ask Congress for an additional $US75 billion to cover the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through to September, to make a tax cut for most workers permanent and to raise taxes on the wealthy.
The plan also contains a contentious proposal to raise hundreds of billions of dollars by auctioning off permits to exceed carbon emissions caps Mr Obama wants to impose on users of fossil fuels to address global warming.
All told, the deficit for the ongoing 2009 budget year would reach $US1.75 trillion, up from a $1.5trillion estimate revealed just days ago by the White House.
The budget deficit for 2010 would hit $US1.2 trillion and gradually ease to $US533 billion by 2013, administration officials say.
That's about 3 per cent of the size of the economy, a level the administration says it can maintain through the second half of the decade.
The US Treasury already is doling out portions of the $US787billion stimulus package Mr Obama pushed through Congress earlier this month. That fund was designed to work in tandem with a $700 billion financial bailout program passed in the last months of the former Bush administration.
The budget document will formally set down a long list of campaign promises and will be the best evidence yet of Mr Obama's argument that times of dark economic crisis can be a catalyst for sweeping political reform.
The president is expected to ask Congress to finance education, energy and environmental reforms, setting up a new battle with Republicans in Congress after fierce clashes over the recently approved stimulus plan, which was supported by only three Republican senators.
Mr Obama is expected to fulfil a campaign pledge to raise taxes on Americans earning more than $US250,000 a year from 35 per cent to just under 40 per cent, yielding some $US2 trillion over 10 years. Major savings are expected by winding down US military efforts in Iraq, which soaks up $US170 billion a year.

A new GOP ad claims that Barack Obama is planning to spend "a trillion dollars" in new government programs, such as health care and investments in green technology. John McCain has made a very similar claim. In a campaign stop Monday, in Columbus, Ohio, the Republican presidential candidate said that his Democratic rival was proposing "more than $860 million " in new spending. The Obama camp contests the claim. So what is the truth?
The Facts
There is clearly a significant philosophical difference between the two candidates on taxing and spending. Independent analyses show that McCain would raise less money in taxes than Obama, but he would also spend less. According to the independent Tax Policy Center , neither candidate does anything significant to curb the projected increase in the size of the national debt by trillions of dollars over the next decade.

The non-partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget calculates that Obama has promised a total of $990 billion in new spending over his first four-year term. At the same time, he has also proposed spending cuts that amount to around $989 billion, so the net cost roughly balances out. The debt will continue to increase, more or less in line with current projections, based on keeping most of the Bush tax cuts.

"Obama has talked about a lot of new spending initiatives, but he has also talked about new ways to curb spending," said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee, whose detailed budget analyses are available here . "I give him points for holding the line."

A very different calculation has been made by the conservative National Taxpayers Union, which has compiled a much more detailed list of the two candidates' proposed spending plans. According to NTU calculations , Obama is proposing net spending increases of around $292 billion a year, or more than $1 trillion over four years.

The NTU Foundation tally includes many smaller spending proposals (less than $2 billion each) ignored by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. Together, these campaign promises add up to tens of billions of dollars a year. But that by itself is not sufficient to explain the discrepancy between the two thinktanks. The NTU Foundation appears to be using a different methodology for some of the big-ticket items, such as health care spending. Over the next few weeks, I will attempt to compare the two sets of analyses to determine which is closer to the truth.

The NTU Foundation looks only at spending, and makes no attempt to look at the overall fiscal implications of the two candidates' tax plans. Senior analyst Demian Brady said it was unclear whether the Obama spending proposals would be financed by tax increases, or an increase in the national debt.

Jason Furman, a senior Obama economics adviser, dismissed the NTU analysis as politically "partisan." He said that the NTU was counting Obama's refundable health tax credits as extra government "spending," and ignored various spending cuts proposed by Obama. The McCain campaign did not respond for a request for comment.
The Pinocchio Test
Barack Obama has proposed a series of big new spending initiatives on the campaign trail. He has also proposed some significant spending cuts. Economists disagree about the likely fiscal impact of the Obama proposals. Even allowing for this disagreement, it is nevertheless clear that neither the Obama plan, nor the McCain plan, will put the country back on the path to fiscal health. Neither campaign is being completely honest about the economic challenges ahead. Two Pinocchios apiece.

Obama Unveils $3.6 Trillion Budget, Sets Aside Billions for Health Care

President Obama on Thursday unveiled a $3.55 trillion budget for next year, a spending plan that sets aside billions for health care and the ailing financial industry and keeps the federal deficit north of $1 trillion.

The fiscal 2010 budget increases taxes on the wealthy but still forecasts a deficit of $1.2 trillion, though the president and his budget director Peter Orszag said the administration has identified $2 trillion in long-term reductions to keep with the president's pledge of halving the deficit by 2013.

But Obama said "we must add to our deficits in the short-term to provide immediate relief to families and get our economy moving."

In addition to next year's spending, Obama proposed more immediate changes that would push spending to $3.94 trillion in the current year. That would result in a record deficit Obama projects will hit $1.75 trillion, reflecting the massive spending being undertaken to battle a severe recession and the worst financial crisis in seven decades.

Obama and Orszag pledged to make big investments in energy, education and health care.

The fiscal 2010 budget sets aside a "reserve fund" of $634 billion as a "down payment" on the costs of universal health care coverage over 10 years.

The budget, while not specifically calling for additional bank bail out funds, also creates a budget allocation of $750 billion for the Treasury Department to purchase financial assets of struggling banks. This amount is $50 billion larger than the first bank bailout.

The administration say it has no current plans to request the extra money to prop up the banks, but if it does the $750 billion in rescue funding is expected to directly cost taxpayers about $250 billion. Under government accounting, funds used to purchase bank assets are not scored on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

The budget outline calls over 10 years for $637 billion in higher taxes on the estimated 5 percent of taxpayers with annual adjusted income of $250,000 or more. For taxpayers who earn less than that, the budget seeks $770 billion in tax cuts or tax refunds.

The president, who gave an overview of the fiscal 2010 budget Thursday morning, said he is beginning the long-term task of restoring fiscal discipline despite massive deficit spending he claims is necessary to kick-start the economy.

"There are some hard choices that lie ahead," Obama said. "We're going to go through our books, page-by-page, line-by-line to eliminate waste and inefficiency."

But Republican leaders criticized the proposed spending plan as a poor example of fiscal discipline.

"I agree with the president that we need to make some tough decisions regarding how we spend taxpayer dollars. Unfortunately, at this juncture, while the American people are tightening their belts, Washington seems to be taking its belt off," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement.

"This budget makes clear that the era of big government is back, and Democrats want you to pay for it," House Minority Leader John Boehner said in a statement.

The budget extends the middle class tax cuts passed by the Bush administration in 2001 and 2003, but lets cuts for the wealthy expire to help pay for his plan. Those cuts were due to expire at the end of 2010. If Congress approves Obama's recommendations, the Bush tax cuts would expire only for couples making more than $250,000 per year.

The president's reserve fund for health care covers roughly two-thirds of the anticipated 10-year cost of universal health care -- projected at $1 trillion.

The administration will work with Congress to locate the remaining funds to finance the plan. The White House contends by directly telling Congress how much universal health coverage is projected to cost, it can devote more time to debating the methods of achieving coverage instead of getting bogged down in conflicting cost estimates.

The $634 billion down payment on expanding health care coverage would come in part from a $318 billion increase over 10 years in taxes on the wealthy, defined as couples making more than $250,000 per year and individuals making more than $200,000. The tax increase would occur by reducing the benefit the wealthy get on tax deductions.

The other half of the down payment on Obama's drive toward universal health care -- $318 billion -- would come from curtailing payments to hospitals and insurance companies under Medicare and drug payments under Medicaid.

The cost of the stimulus bill and the increased bailout support would push the deficit for this year to $1.75 trillion, nearly four times last year's record $455 billion and a percentage of the economy -- just over 12 percent -- not seen since World War II. The deficit would remain near $1 trillion over the next two years before dropping to $581 billion in 2012 and $533 billion in 2013, the year that Obama has pledged to cut the deficit he inherited in half.

Obama's blueprint awards domestic agencies budget increases, on average, of 7 percent in 2010 over 2009 levels. The Pentagon would get a 4 percent boost, to $534 billion next year, but would then get increases of 2 percent or less over the next several years.

Obama also asked for an additional $75 billion to cover the costs of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan through September, the end of the current budget year. The administration will also ask for $130 billion for Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010 and will budget the costs of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan at $50 billion annually over the next several years.

The budget also imposes higher taxes on carbon through a "cap and trade" system that generates $645 billion over 10 years in new revenue by creating an auction among utilities and companies where they purchase pollution credits. These credits cover the "price" of the pollution each utility or company producers. Those who produce less pollution can sell them to companies that produce more.

Of the $645 billion the administration intends to raise in pollution taxes, the president sets aside $120 billion for federal subsidies to develop alternative energy sources. The remainder of energy taxes will finance the "make work pay" tax credit, a $400 per individual and $800 per couple refund of their payroll taxes.

Here are some highlights from the budget:

Tax increases -- The budget will impose the Clinton-era tax rates of 36 percent and 39.6 percent for couples earning more than $250,000 and individuals earning more than $200,000. (Current policy imposes a 33 percent rate on income from $200,000 to $357,000, and a 35 percent rate above $357,000. Those rates would jump to 36 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively). This change would generate $338 billion over 10 years.

The budget would also limit tax deductions for itemized deductions for families earning more than $250,000 and individual making more than $200,000. This would generate $179 billion over 10 years.

The plans would change capital gains tax rates to 20 percent, up from 15 percent, also for individuals above $200,000 and families above $250,000. This would generate $118 billion.

Business tax increases -- The budget imposes $353 billion over 10 years in "revenue changes and loophole closures." The plan includes at least 14 different tax increases.

Tax cuts -- The budget includes a tax credit that would provide a refund on payroll taxes of up to $400 per individual and $800 per family. This costs $536 billion over 10 years.It expands the earned income tax credit, costing $32 billion over 10 years. It expands the child tax credit, costing $70 billion over 10 years. It expands IRA and 401k credits, costing $55 billion over 10 years.

Business tax cuts -- The budget eliminates capital gains for small business, costing $7 billion over 10 years. It makes the research and experimentation tax credit permanent, costing $74 billion over 10 years.

The president proposed the first tax increase on high-income earners - the first in 16 years - to help pay for sweeping health-care reforms, asking Congress to cap tax deductions for wealthy Americans.

"We must make it a priority to give every American quality healthcare," said Obama, who unveiled the plan as part of a massive $4 trillion budget for the 2010 fiscal year.

Republican lawmakers blasted Obama's proposed budget, saying it contains too much spending.

"Everyone agrees that all Americans deserve access to affordable health care," said House Republican Leader John Boehner. "But is increasing taxes during an economic recession. . . the right way to accomplish that goal?''

The move rolls back a course set by former President George W. Bush of lowering taxes for high-wage earners - the cornerstone of his administration's economic policies.

The president proposed the first tax increase on high-income earners - the first in 16 years - to help pay for sweeping health-care reforms, asking Congress to cap tax deductions for wealthy Americans.

"Everyone agrees that all Americans deserve access to affordable health care," said House Republican Leader John Boehner. "But is increasing taxes during an economic recession. . . the right way to accomplish that goal?''

The move rolls back a course set by former President George W. Bush of lowering taxes for high-wage earners - the cornerstone of his administration's economic policies.

Obama's budget plan calls for huge shifts in spending

President Barack Obama's new budget blueprint estimates a stunning deficit of $1.75 trillion for the current fiscal year, which began five months ago, then lays out a wrenching change of course as he seeks to finance his own priorities while stanching the flow of red ink.

By redirecting enormous streams of deficit spending toward programs like health care, education and energy, and paying for some of it through taxes on the rich, pollution surcharges, and cuts in such inviolable programs as farm subsidies, the $3.55 trillion spending plan Obama is undertaking signals a radical change of course that Congress has yet to endorse.

The deficit he inherited, a shortfall of more than $1 trillion as the current fiscal year began, has continued to swell in recent months with additional bank bailouts, the first wave of spending from a newly enacted stimulus plan and the continuing costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The administration, as it had announced, will try to cut that amount sharply by 2013, when Obama's first term ends, to $533 billion, even as it escalates spending on crucial priorities.

"There are times when you can afford to redecorate your house," Obama said on Thursday morning as he released an outline of the budget for the next fiscal year, which begins in October, "and there are times when you have to focus on rebuilding its foundation."

His administration will attempt to close the large fiscal gap even while starting a major health-care initiative intended to substantially extend coverage; to do so, it foresees increasing taxes on the wealthiest Americans and using revenue from a new program: selling carbon credits to manufacturers as part of a cap-and-trade plan meant to slow climate change.

Further savings would come from such items as a proposal to phase out government payments to crop producers making more than $500,000. Additional revenues are posited from a tightening of tax-code enforcement.

"Having inherited a trillion-dollar deficit that will take a long time for us to close, we need to focus on what we need to move the economy forward, not on what's nice to have," Obama said. The budget plan projects the deficit falling to $1.17 trillion in 2010 and down to Obama's goal of $533 billion in 2013, then increasing again to $712 billion by 2019. Obama takes credit for $2 trillion in deficit reduction over 10 years, three quarters of which comes from lower expenses in Iraq and Afghanistan and most of the rest from tax increases on the wealthy and revenues from a market-based cap on greenhouse gas emissions.

The forecasts are also founded on optimistic assumptions that the recession will end by next year and quickly produce stronger growth than was seen in the last decade. After the economy shrinks this year, the Obama team assumes that the gross domestic product adjusted for inflation will increase by 3.2 percent next year and then 4 percent or more the following three years, a rate nearly twice the average of the Bush years.

The budget projects slightly lower spending on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars to $130 billion in the 2010 fiscal year, then a much larger drop beginning in fiscal 2011, when Obama wants to have combat forces out of Iraq. The basic military budget in 2010 would be $534 billion in 2010.

Obama promised to include the full costs of the wars in all his budgets, saying that because of "dishonest accounting" past budgets have "not told the whole truth about how precious tax dollars are spent. Large sums have been left off the books, including the true cost of fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan."

The deficit, which at 12.3 percent of gross domestic product is expected to touch its highest level since 1945, could grow this year if the economy worsens significantly and a new infusion of capital into distressed banks is ordered; the administration has estimated that this might call for adding $250 billion to the cost of the bailout already approved by Congress.

"No part of my budget will be free from scrutiny or untouched by reform," Obama said, in a nod to critics who have suggested that the economic rescue package includes runaway waste.

"I don't think that we can continue on our current course," he added.

Republicans quickly signaled deep skepticism about Obama's approach. Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House Republican whip, said Democrats should not "spend imaginary money" or increase taxes at a difficult moment.

"It is not just misguided but dangerous to raise taxes on small businesses and families that can't afford to pay them," Cantor said. "In fact, a majority of those penalized by the proposed tax increase in this budget are small businesses."

The new proposal for the coming fiscal year and beyond includes many ambitious and costly programs that would have to be approved by Congress, including some that Republicans and fiscal hawks are likely to oppose.

The tax proposal to help pay for health care, coming after recent years in which wealth has become more concentrated at the top of the income scale, introduces a politically volatile edge to the congressional debate over Obama's domestic priorities.

The president also proposed, in the 10-year budget outline he released Thursday, to use revenues from the centerpiece of his environmental policy — a plan under which companies must buy permits to exceed pollution emission caps — to pay for an extension of a two-year tax credit that benefits low-wage and middle-income people.

The combined effect of the two revenue-raising proposals, on top of Obama's existing plan to roll back the Bush-era income tax reductions on households with income exceeding $250,000 a year, would be a pronounced move to redistribute wealth by reimposing a larger share of the tax burden on corporations and the most affluent taxpayers.

Universal health care is worth that price, Obama said.

"We must make it a priority to give every single American quality, affordable health care," he said. "With this budget we are making a historic commit to comprehensive health-care reform."

The officials said the increase in revenues, estimated at $318 billion over 10 years, would account for about half of a $634 billion "reserve fund" that Obama will set aside in his budget to address changes in the health care system. The other half would come from proposed cost savings in Medicare, Medicaid and other health programs.

In a document summarizing its proposals, the White House said it would finance coverage for the uninsured in part by "rebalancing the tax code so that the wealthiest pay more."

To narrow the deficits, the president proposed $636.7 billion in tax increases on the wealthy over the next 10 years, largely by reversing tax cuts passed by President George W. Bush on taxpayers who make $200,000 or more, or $250,000 for married couples. The top income tax bracket would return to 39.6 percent from 36 percent and capital gains and dividends for those over the income limits would be taxed at 20 percent.

The White House also proposed tax provisions that would raise $353.5 billion over 10 years by repealing credits and reductions for oil and gas companies, toughening tax collections and other changes in tax law.

On the other side of the ledger, Obama would cut taxes for lower- and middle-class Americans by $770.1 billion over 10 years and for businesses by $149.4 billion.

Among the most challenging areas for reducing spending are in the Pentagon's accounts, which have been running at record levels as the wars continue, the military expands, and the costs of building new weapons escalates.

While the budget outline requests a small increase in basic military spending, the Obama administration has made it clear that it intends to shift some of the money from huge cold war-style weapons systems to smaller programs focused on fighting insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan and new threats to the nation's cybersecurity.

Internal debate over which programs to cut is still so intense that Defense Secretary Robert Gates has taken the unusual step of requiring even the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to sign agreements not to leak the details. But some clues have emerged, and military consultants say it seems clear that expensive missile defense systems and parts of the army's vast modernization effort will be cut back. Some also say that plans for a new Navy destroyer are likely to be scrapped.

In the short term, the White House said it would ask Congress in coming weeks for another $75.5 billion for the wars on top of the $65.9 billion already approved to get through the rest of the current fiscal year. It builds $130 billion in expenses for the wars into the 2010 fiscal plan but keeps it separate from the base Pentagon budget.

Beyond the assumption that cost of the wars fall over the next decade, the budget blueprint outlines few cuts in big-ticket spending. The most significant involve paring agricultural subsidies for wealthier farmers and eliminating intermediary costs for student loan programs. The blueprint also projects $316 billion in savings over 10 years from increasing efficiency and competitive bidding in Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Few individual departments, though, will see their budgets actually go down in 2010. Just 3 of the 15 cabinet departments will be cut from 2009 to 2010 — Energy, Health and Human Services and Justice. But energy and health are also getting huge infusions of money from the $787 billion economic recovery legislation just signed into law.

The Obama budget promises a comprehensive effort to address global warming, slash oil imports and create a new "green" economy that produces millions of new jobs. The White House estimates that the effort, built around a cap-and-trade program to limit greenhouse gas emissions, will produce $150 billion over 10 years beginning in 2012 to finance renewable energy projects and potentially hundreds of billions of dollars more that will be returned to families, communities and businesses that suffer hardship as the result of higher energy prices.

However, Congress is in the early stages of debating global warming legislation program, and any revenue from it is still largely speculative.

The Department of Energywill have much more to spend, thanks in part to money from the stimulus package for research, weatherization programs and modernization of the electric grid this year and beyond. Also included in the current year are several billion dollars in aid for American automakers to design and build high-mileage cars. The Department of Interior budget grows slowly, with new money for park maintenance, endangered species protection and renewable energy projects.

At the Environmental Protection Agency, the budget projects a 34 percent spending increase for 2010, with much of the money devoted to clean water projects, a Great Lakes restoration program and across-the-board increases for regulation, research and enforcement.

Because utilities and other businesses would presumably pass on the costs of carbon payments to customers, Obama will propose to use most of the revenue from the greenhouse gas emission permits to finance an extension of the new "Making Work Pay" tax credit beyond the two years covered in the economic recovery plan.

That tax relief, the administration will argue, will offset households' higher costs for utilities and other products and services from businesses' passing on their permit expenses.

That tax credit will annually provide $400 to low-wage and middle-income workers or $800 to couples; Obama would like to increase those figures to $500 and $1,000. The credit phases out for those with incomes above $75,000 a year and for couples with incomes of more than $150,000; no benefit would go to individuals with more than $100,000 income and couples with $200,000.

The tax credit will begin showing up in the form of lower withholding for eligible workers beginning April 1.

The remainder of the projected revenue from the permits will finance Obama's campaign promise to provide $15 billion a year over 10 years to subsidize research and development of alternative energy sources, officials said. The stimulus package included a multibillion-dollar down payment to develop a national electricity grid to harness and distribute energy from such sources, including wind farms.

Behind the numbers in Obama's first budget is one of the most far-reaching domestic agendas in years, and at a time when the president and Congress are already grappling with an economic crisis worse than any in decades. The environmental permits would not take effect until 2012, at which point the administration expects the economy to have recovered. Former Bush chief speechwriter Marc Thiessen kicked up a big fuss yesterday with a Washington Post Op ed slamming Obama’s executive orders by saying that if there’s another terror attack, “Americans will hold Obama responsible.”
Today Thiessen ratchets up the rhetoric a couple dozen notches in a post at National Review :

The CIA program he is effectively shutting down is the reason why America has not been attacked again after 9/11. He has removed the tool that is singularly responsible for stopping al-Qaeda from flying planes into the Library Tower in Los Angeles, Heathrow Airport, and London’s Canary Warf, and blowing up apartment buildings in Chicago, among other plots. It’s not even the end of inauguration week, and Obama is already proving to be the most dangerous man ever to occupy the Oval Office.

Obama is already “the most dangerous” President ever?

Here’s the thing about this. You have here an assertion that crosses over from mere opinion into verifiable or disprovable assertion. If you’re going to say that someone has already proven himself to be dangerous , as opposed to merely being potentially dangerous, you need to point to empirical evidence of this, such as lives lost to foreign threats on your watch. There haven’t been any such lives lost under President Obama yet, unlike other past Presidents.

That aside, whatever side of the arguments on torture and Guantanamo Bay you’re on, this is the sort of toxic rhetoric that is supposed to draw condemnation from the sort of non-partisan Beltway pundits that routinely call for “civility” and bipartisan comity in our political discourse. Yet we’re not hearing much of anything about this increasingly vitriolic attack campaign from those folks at all. And I’m not expecting too, either.
