It is the recognition of familial social obligations. Most cultures show preference to having sons because they are economically agrarian. A farmer with many strong sons will not fall into penury in his old age if the sons recognize their filial obligations. Widows and orphans are covered as well in this duty. This social safety net can take many forms from hauling wood for your parents fire to a monthly Social Security check. We all grow old eventually; e.g. "The Story of Ruth".&lt;/p&gt;</description><dc:creator>Twentiethman</dc:creator><foaf:maker><foaf:Person><foaf:name>Twentiethman</foaf:name><foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://yedda.com/people/735570146339025/?src=rss:qb:ap" /><foaf:img rdf:resource="http://static1.yeddacdn.com/images/defaultUserIcon_rmt9c1d22d.gif" /></foaf:Person></foaf:maker><yedda:post><yedda:type>answer</yedda:type><yedda:thread previous="http://yedda.com/questions/politics_government_filial_piety_951887381060358/major_nbsp_Chinese_principal_518518403377465" /><yedda:rating>3.0</yedda:rating></yedda:post><pubDate>Mon, 12 Oct 2009 17:49:54 GMT</pubDate><guid>http://yedda.com/questions/politics_government_filial_piety_951887381060358/Filial_Piety_means_family_respect_350784371792041?src=rss:qb:qbi</guid></item></channel></rss>
