How to publish a book

I've written a book of memior's about some of the calls that I've gone on over the 28 years on a major fire department as a firefighter, a paramedic, and an arson investigator. Some are funny and light, and some will tear your heart out. All are unforgetable to me and I wanted to share them with everyone who may not know just what it takes to be a firefighter and what it really means to "Protect and Serve". I try and bring the reader along with me on each and every call and to paint that picture as we go along. I'm now trying to make a decision as to the best way to publish this project. I have no literary agent to represent me to publishers nor do I have a lot of money to work with right now, and I'm a first time author, but I feel that this story is important and must be told. The work and the long hours along with the trauma and the unthinkable situations that some of these firefighters get into count for a lot of sleepless nights and nightmares that live on with them for years, even arter they retire maybe even a lifetime and they don't complain. I've concidered self publishing, E-books or just building my own web site and selling that way. I need some advice from serious people in the know and am looking forward to any sugestions. Right now I'm looking at a self publishing program which seems to cover most of my needs. I need some direction and some things that I must concider. Please only serious replys. Thank you.

I think you might turn to the firefighter departments to ask for funding this might be a project they would want to endorse. I think maybe a history section or a department that deals with preserving memories and tradition.

When I meet an author with a great book concept, one who’s definitely the right person to write that book, right away I’ll often encourage him or her to self-publish. This is because I know that an author is thoroughly invested in what they have to say. Your publisher can help you determine the genre if you like.And this is your book - no one should tell you what to do.

Hey, congrats! Not everyone has the courage to face the publishing industry even if their literature is highly recommended for public consumption. Because you already have your materials, the next thing you might decide on doing is to find a publisher who will be your retailer, publisher, editor and distributor at the same time - which is of course not that easy to find.

Maybe you would like to ask around and perhaps shop around. Many would also suggest getting an agent which could take SO long for them to sit down and actually notice what you have there and believe me, we are not just talking months here but years. Let me give you something to peruse at while you are at it and hopefully this will help in your ride to the wagon of success.
