The radius of each of the smaller circles is 1 in. Find the area of the shaded region to the nearest unit. I have no idea where to begin. I am trying to teach myself a middle aged woman simple math. I figured it's never too late to learn. Thanks

<foaf:maker><foaf:Person><foaf:name>Davene Fajack</foaf:name><yedda:age>48</yedda:age><foaf:homepage rdf:resource="http://yedda.com/people/5180153012166/?src=rss:qb:ap" /><foaf:img rdf:resource="http://static1.yeddacdn.com/images/defaultUserIcon_rmt9c1d22d.gif" /></foaf:Person></foaf:maker><yedda:post><yedda:type>question</yedda:type></yedda:post>

RE: If the circumference of a circle is about 60 in ...

C = piD

Circumference is equal to Pi times the Diameter:

Area is equal to Pi times the radius squared:

"Shaded" means they overlap somehow, but we cannot see your diagram, or

get the idea from your words, of how the smaller ones are placed on the larger.

Please give more details.

If they are apart from eachother with their centres on the circumference of the larger, a very rough estimate would be pi X 8^2 minus 2 X (1/2) pi ~ 63 pi ~ 198 square units.
