1

First, you need to become familiar with Windows Explorer. Right click on Start, click on Explore and you are there. Note that you see the files and folders and by clicking on the + sign left of a folder you see all the files in a folder. Note you can highlight, right click and then cut or copy and paste. Understand this function and you are half way home.

Step 2
Second, understand the concept of sharing a folder on the Local Area Network (LAN). Right click a folder, click on sharing and note the prompts. A folder that is shared can be seen by other pcs on the LAN. You can set privledges to read only or to read and write. Understand this as well.

Step 3
Third, you put all pcs on the same local area network, and create a new folder or new set of folders on the pc where you want files to be after the transfer, and enable sharing to include read and write. This allows these folders to be seen from the other pcs.

Step 4
Fourth, go to the pcs from which you wish to send the files and then using Windows Explorer, open My Network Places (click on + sign), open Microsoft Windows Network, and you should see the pc to which you wish to transfer files. They may be in different work groups but this should not matter. Once this is done, use a copy and paste proceedure to transfer the files. Verify the transfer and you are done.

Firewire port

Check the connections on your computers. Your computers should have a USB connection or a Firewire connection, or both.

Step 2
Purchase a hard drive that will connect with both your computers. Hard drives come with USB or Firewire connections, or both.

Step 3
Connect the hard drive to your first computer. Transfer all the data that you want. Then, connect the hard drive to the other computer, and move all the data over. Optionally, you can just store all the data on the hard drive permanently, in order to free up more space on the second computer.

Step 4
Optionally, you can delete all the data from the first computer to free up space.

You could do the above, but this might be simpler. If you have a digital camera that has a compact flash, memory stick and a cable that one end is a USB connection and the other is the card reader, just connect to the desktop and download your files to the card reader and then upload them to the laptop! I don't recommend downloading images directly from the camera to the desktop, in case there is a power surge, then you may lose the camera and the images on the card. Go get a card reader and give it a try, they are cheap!
